Local junior tennis players Rox Rogers and Karolina Dobiecka each made it through to Saturday in their respective USTA National Indoor Championships before being eliminated.

Rogers, 17, from Talent, was in the Boys 18 tournament in Overland Park, Kansas, while Dobiecka, 13, from Ashland, was in the Girls 14 competition in Toledo, Ohio. They both play out of Rogue Valley Country Club.

The Level 1 tournaments began Friday.

On Saturday, Rogers lost in consolation singles play to 24th-seeded Kazuki Matsuno, 6-4, 6-0.

Rogers had dropped his opening match to Adam Oscislawski, 6-3, 6-2, then advanced in the consolation round when would-be opponent James Scotty withdrew due to illness.

Dobiecka played doubles Saturday with Nishitha Saravanan. They fell to Elisabeth Jones and Kathryn Treiber, 6-3. On Friday, Dobiecka and Saravanan beat Natalie Blocke and Cambelle Bouchard, 6-2.

In singles, Dobiecka dropped her first two matches and was ousted. She was beaten 6-3, 6-1 by third seed Alexandra Torre, and 6-1, 6-4 by Angie Zhou.

Hockey

WEST SOUND WARRIORS 3, SOUTHERN OREGON SPARTANS 2: Yanneck Kumli had both goals for Southern Oregon during Western States Hockey League action at The RRRink.

Samuel Pelech netted the go-ahead goal with 1 minute, 58 seconds left in the second period for the Warriors (10-11), who outshot the Spartans (3-20), 34-32.

The two squads meet today at 1:30.
