ASHLAND — Nate Eli won a hard-fought heavyweight battle against Phoenix’s Ishmael DeLaTorre in a battle of state meet qualifiers from different classifications as South Medford picked up two wins in a nonleague three-way dual Wednesday at Mountain Avenue Gym.

Eli defeated DeLaTorre 5-3 to help the Panthers finish off a 46-22 win over Phoenix. South Medford also beat Ashland, 72-10.

“We looked a little better on our feet today,” South Medford coach David Bage said, “and this was a good indicator of where we need to be going forward.”

Also for South, 126-pounder Killian Cosgrove picked up a 12-2 major decision over Phoenix’s Youanni Chavez, and 160-pounder Justin Josephson earned two wins, including a pin of Phoenix’s Noah Cornett.

TRINITY 66, ROGUE VALLEY ADVENTIST 45: At Bend, Rogue Valley Adventist, which trailed 31-25 at halftime, struggled in the second half against host Trinity’s press defense in a Mountain Valley League game.

Ruben Tovar, a sophomore guard, had 12 points to lead the Red Tail Hawks (6-6, 1-2 MVL), while freshman wing Caleb Jackson and sophomore wing Isaiah Christensen scored 11 apiece and senior post Marcus Wiggers hauled in 14 rebounds.

The Saints (8-4), who held RVA to six points in the third quarter, marched to their fourth straight victory.
