EUGENE — A promising start by the North Medford boys basketball team Friday began to fade in the second quarter where South Eugene stole the momentum and turned the tables early in the second half.

Kaison Faust capitalized at the free-throw line down the stretch to bring the Black Tornado within five points but the Axemen completed their second-half rally with a 67-63 Southwest Conference victory at South Eugene High School.

“We just didn’t get it done tonight and didn’t bring enough energy,” said North Medford coach Scott Plankenhorn. “We played a great first quarter but played poorly in the second quarter, and continued to miss while they continued to make.”

North Medford (12-2, 1-1 SWC) charged out of the gates to grab a 19-12 lead in the first period but after that, the shots stopped falling for the Black Tornado, which went into halftime clinging to a 29-27 lead.

The Axemen (7-8, 2-1 SWC) continued their hot shooting to capture the lead in the third quarter and maintained a double-digit lead until late in the fourth.

With around two minutes remaining and the Axemen up by nine points, the Black Tornado received a ray of hope when Faust was fouled and a technical foul was called on South Eugene’s Cole McAninch, which put North’s top scorer at the foul line with four shots and possession of the ball. Faust obliged by making all four shots to cut the lead to five but the Black Tornado missed the opportunity to make it a one-possession game, and the Axemen were able to hold on.

The Black Tornado finished 8-for-21 from the charity stripe in the second half and just 11-for-26 in the game while South Eugene made 15 of 17 at line.

Faust generated 27 points, five rebounds, four steals and three assists for North, with Quinton Rumrey chipping in 12 points and Eli Spence going for six points and nine rebounds.

Senior guard Jay Elmore poured in 29 points and made five 3-pointers for the Axemen who finished 10-for-21 from long range.
