REDMOND — Crater settled for a fifth-place tie with Redmond in the 5A championship bracket and North Medford placed sixth in the 6A championship bracket to wrap up Day 2 of the Oregon Classic on Saturday.
The Comets were knocked from title contention in the quarterfinals when they tied Sandy, 42-42, but lost on a tiebreaker to fall into the consolation semifinals. In Crater’s next match, it easily dispatched Hermiston 61-18 to set the stage for a matchup with Redmond that was not updated as of press time.
Tanner Ulrey (113), Zeth Brower (120), Dallas Howard (145), Logan Meek (152) and Beau Crawford (220) each won two matches Saturday.
North Medford started its day with a 54-18 setback against Newberg before routing Oregon City, 52-18, in the consolation semifinals. In the fifth-place final, West Linn edged the Black Tornado 42-34.
Cole Zoller (132), Thomas Hamilton (145) and Andres Ramirez (152) each went 3-0 Saturday for North Medford.
In bonus round action at the 6A level, South Medford lost 54-30 to West Albany while Grants Pass defeated Clackamas 42-33. The Panthers won the final five weights behind efforts from Cole Schumack (170), Ryan Beck (182), Louie Blandau (195), Michael Cormier (220) and Nate Eli (285).
Also at the 5A level, Eagle Point fell short in bonus round action against Pendleton, 48-34. Thomas Zomerdyk (113), Bradey Thrash (126), Jacob Hukill (195) and Lane Lambert (220) each earned solid victories for the Eagles.
Roseburg beat Newberg, 36-28, for the 6A title while Dallas topped Mountain View, 39-23, for the 5A crown.
ROGUE RIVER INVITATIONAL: At Rogue River, Trevor Fulton and Zach Adler won their weight divisions to lead Ashland to a second-place showing, and Rogue River placed third in the nine-team Rogue River Invitational.
Del Norte won the tourney with 140.5 points, with Ashland finishing as the distant runner-up with 88. Rogue River had 84.
Fulton earned three pins in the 170-pound weight class, pinning Chase Nelson of Illinois Valley in the championship match in 1 minute, 48 seconds. Fulton needed just 48 seconds to dispatch Christifer Setzer of Illinois Valley in the quarterfinals and pinned Caleb Barnwell of Rogue River in 5:44 to advance to the final.
Adler earned two wins, both by fall, to claim the 220-pound title. Following a first-round bye, he pinned Averi Winn of Brookings in 2:38 then pinned Brenden Schrader of Del Norte in 56 seconds to clinch the championship.
For Rogue River, heavyweight Gabe Echaide pinned two opponents to take his weight class, and 126-pounder William McVeigh placed second. Echaide pinned James Solomon in the final in 1:32.
