KLAMATH FALLS — Rogue Valley Adventist held Triad to two points in the middle two quarters as the Red Tail Hawks avenged their only loss of the season and clinched the top seed in the Mountain Valley League girls basketball tournament with a 25-15 victory Saturday.

“We’ve been definitely preparing for (Triad) and working hard, and it definitely paid off,” Rogue Valley Adventist head coach Marlene Slagle said.

Sophomore post Zoe Belovitch led the Hawks with nine points, seven rebounds and four steals, Hanna Whilhelm added six points, four rebounds and four steals and Rose Tovar four points and six rebounds, as RVA (21-1, 11-1 MVL) won its 10th straight.

The Hawks will face either North Lake or Hosanna in the MVL semifinals Friday. The winner of the MVL tournament will only have to win one state playoff game to advance to the 1A state tournament.

“Basically, it’s going to come down to who wants it the most,” Slagle said.

Sophomore post Mae Drost led Triad (17-6) with six points, but the Timberwolves had a nine-game win streak snapped.

GILCHRIST 72, PROSPECT 23: At Gilchrist, Prospect ended its season by falling to Gilchrist in a Mountain Valley League contest.

The Cougars (3-21) lost their eighth straight game, while the Grizzlies (3-15), who closed out their season by winning two in a row, nearly doubled their previous highest output for points in a game (37) this season.

Boys Basketball

HENLEY 53, CASCADE CHRISTIAN 46: Cascade Christian senior wing Joel McLemore led all scorers with 15 points, but Henley outscored the host Challengers 19-11 in the fourth quarter to snap their four-game win streak in the nonleague game.

Tyler Cochran added 11 points and Ben Dunn 10 for Cascade Christian (16-9), which hosts the Southern Cascade League tournament next Saturday.

Henley (17-4), which has won seven straight, was led by McKade Allen and Dale Fenters, who scored 13 points apiece.

GILCHRIST 60, PROSPECT 40: Brendan Raines scored 16 points for Prospect, which closed out its season by falling to Gilchrist in a Mountain Valley League contest.

Raines and fellow seniors Shane Lawler (four points) and Josh Bruce (three points) played their final game for the Cougars (1-21), who put together their second-highest scoring output of the season.

The Grizzlies (2-17) snapped a 10-game losing streak.

TRIAD 52, RV ADVENTIST 36: At Altamont, Rogue Valley Adventist wrapped up its regular season by losing to host Triad in a Mountain Valley League contest.

The Red Tail Hawks (11-12, 5-8 MVL) won three of their last five games, while the Timberwolves (18-6, 11-2) captured their fourth straight victory heading into the postseason.

Swimming

SWC DISTRICT MEET: At Springfield, two North Medford swimmers, freshman Zoey Dodson and sophomore Daniel Olson, each won an event in the Southwest Conference district meet held at Willamalane Swim Club.

Dodson was first the girls 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1 minute, 57.46 seconds, while Olson captured the top spot in the boys 50 free with a time of 21.86 seconds.

Dodson also qualified for state in the girls 100 butterfly, in which she was third a time of 59.24, besting the minimum qualifying time of 59.96.

Also automatically qualifying for state was junior Hallie Kolb of Grants Pass, who won the girls 100 breaststroke in 1:06.27, and senior Chris Lessenich of Grants Pass, who was third in the boys 200 free in 1:47.29, eclipsing the minimum mark of 1:47.77.

MIDWESTERN LEAGUE DISTRICT: At Springfield, Ashland sophomore Chris Frownfelter won the 100-yard backstroke at Willamalane Swim Club to claim the school’s only league title and earn a berth to the Class 5A state meet.

Churchill claimed the boys team title with 376 points, and Springfield won the girls trophy with 407. The Ashland girls placed third, the best local finish.

Frownfelter touched the wall in 56.53 seconds to edge Springfield’s Elijah Dapkus (56.89).

Ashland’s boys 200 medley relay team, consisting of Frownfelter, Rileigh Orr, Hunter Oliver and Ziji Donahoo, placed second in 1:49.99 and is in good position to qualify for state on a wild card. Wild cards will be announced by the OSAA today.

DISTRICT 4 MEET: At North Bend, St. Mary’s placed third in the girls meet and fourth in boys to pace local schools in a meet dominated by North Bend.

The host Bulldogs claimed the boys and girls team titles, racking up 350 points for the boys championship and 393 to run away with the girls.

Caleb and Maryn Ringger and Jasper Zhu of St. Mary’s and Alec Shepherd of Phoenix were the top-performing local representatives. Caleb Ringger placed second in both the 50-yard freestyle (23.36 seconds) and 100 freestyle (51.09), Maryn Ringger placed second in the 100 freestyle (56.26) and third in the 50 freestyle (25.68) and Zhu was second in both the 200 individual medley (2:03.17) and 100 breaststroke (1:03.42).

Shepherd was runner-up in the 100 backstroke (1:00.25) and third in the 100 butterfly (57.68).
