Mallory Meilicke and Katelyn Willard had quite the debut for the Cascade Christian softball team in its season-opener Monday.

Meilicke drove in six runs and Willard tossed a one-hitter for the Challengers, who plated 11 runs in the third inning in a 17-2 win over Hosanna Christian at U.S. Cellular Community Park.

Meilicke had an inside-the-park home run during the Challengers’ big inning. She had a bases-loaded triple in the second as Cascade Christian went up 5-0.

Makenna Payne added a three-run triple in the third and scored four runs.

Willard allowed two unearned runs on one hit and struck out seven without a walk in three innings. She was 2-for-3, drove in three runs and scored three times.

The Challengers also got three runs from Megan Reed.

Presley Robison drove in Kaci Carter with the Comets' lone run. Carter had singled.

ROGUE RIVER 11, BROOKINGS-HARBOR 10: At Rogue River, Jillian Steinbrook-Cory collected three hits and three RBIs to help Rogue River fend off Brookings-Harbor.

Liz Atteberry added two RBIs for the Chieftains (1-0).

UMPQUA VALLEY CHRISTIAN 11, CASCADE CHRISTIAN 2: At Roseburg, Cascade Christian surrendered nine runs in the bottom of the sixth inning in the opening loss.

ICE-BREAKER TOURNEY: The South Medford boys and St. Mary’s girls won a season-opening tournament at Rogue Valley Country Club.

The Panther boys, led by Riggs Loftin and Matt Stranahan, edged Roseburg and Grants Pass. The format was two-person squads playing nine holes each of best ball and scramble.

Kaylee Wu and Kamryn Ford led the Crusaders in the girls tourney, which was an 18-hole scramble.
