In early 1953, the Rogue River Booster Club launched the first National Rooster Crowing Contest as a way to promote the town's local businesses — not just the river. The local merchants thought it a great idea to see which rooster could crow the most within 30 minutes. The champion was Hollerin' Henry with 71 crows, taking the win over 75 other roosters.
