Wisely

Steve and Charlotte "Char" Wisely of Medford celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with a trip to New York to see Broadway plays and the Rockettes Christmas program. They also celebrated with family members on a Disney cruise.

Steve Wisely married Charlotte Joy Riley on Nov. 21, 1959, in Medford.

Steve's family moved to Medford in April 1944, when he was four years old. He graduated from Medford Senior High on Oakdale in 1957.

Charlotte's family moved to Medford from Portland in January 1955, when she was a sophomore in high school. She also graduated in 1957.

Following their second year at Southern Oregon University, Steve and Char were married. Char continued her college education, while Steve worked full-time at Colyear Motor Sales in Medford. After completing her bachelor's degree in 1961, Char acquired her first teaching assignment with Eagle Point School District and Steve returned to college. Steve earned a bachelor's degree in 1963, and a master's degree in 1966 and began teaching in the Eagle Point School District.

Steve became principal of Central Point Elementary in 1967 and then the family moved to Springfield in 1969, where Steve entered a Ph.D. program at the University of Oregon. In 1971, the family moved to Bremerton, Wash., where Steve became assistant superintendent. Seven years later, in 1978, they moved to Lebanon, where Steve served as superintendent of schools. Each time they moved, Char continued to teach in the primary grades.

When an opportunity to return to Medford arose in 1985, they returned to the Rogue Valley. Steve worked as superintendent of Medford School District and Char as a teacher-librarian.

They both retired from the Medford School District in 2003, after a combined 82 years of service as educators. Steve and Char live in Medford and still attend school functions.

They enjoy traveling, camping, fishing, following Medford and the University of Oregon sporting events and spending time with their grandchildren.

They have three sons, Jayme of Chanhassen, Minn., Doug of Tucson, Ariz., and Chris of Medford, and a daughter, Patty, of Medford. They also have seven grandchildren.
