Mahlon "Red" and Hazel Opdahl of Medford celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary Aug. 14, with their family at their home in Medford.
Attending were their children and spouses, Ron and Joanne of Venice, Calif., Gary and Sandee of Burbank, Calif., Steve and Mary of Thousand Oaks, Calif., Joyce and Randy Weaver of Medford, Betty and Jerry Wagar of Redding, Calif., and Carol McGregor of Phoenix, Ariz.
Mahlon Opdahl married Hazel Akkerman on Aug. 18, 1940, in Sioux Falls, S.D.
Red and Hazel met in South Dakota.
They lived their early years in South Dakota and Minnesota where their six children were born. They owned and worked a farm and Red worked part-time in construction.
The family moved to Southern California in 1957 where Red was a general building contractor.
In 1967, Red and Hazel, with their three youngest children, moved to Medford.
Red worked for Medford Construction and Hazel was a cook at Three Fountains in Medford, at Ashland Hospital and later at the Medford schools.
Red and Hazel have been longtime members of Ascension Lutheran Church. Until recently Hazel was very active in the quilting group.
For the past 20 years Red and Hazel have presided over a family reunion of 30 to 40 attendees, usually held at Lake Of The Woods.
Red and Hazel have 15 grandchildren (two deceased) and 10 great-grandchildren.
