50th Anniversary: Mike and Karen Wraight
Mike and Karen Wraight will celebrate their 50th anniversary Friday, June 14. Are they actually still legally married? The minister who married them was defrocked shortly after their vows. This has always been a tantalizing family tale.
Their anniversary will be celebrated in Cairo, Egypt, as part of their six-week bucket list, budget-busting trip to Africa. The trip will take them from Cairo to Cape Town, South Africa. The itinerary will include seeing the pyramids, a Nile River cruise, Victoria Falls, many safaris to spot animals and much more.
The marriage began with a move to Australia to teach for two years. This started their lifelong passion for travel. Upon completion of the Australian adventure the young couple returned to the U.S., where they started a family, including a son, Marq, and daughter, Kris. The couple continued to teach, Karen working for the Southern Oregon Education Service District as a special education teacher, and Mike teaching instrumental music in the Phoenix-Talent School District.
The Wraights have enjoyed calling Southern Oregon home since 1979.
The family has grown. Mike and Karen are very happy to be grandparents to Eliza, who lives in Connecticut with their daughter Kris and wife, Laura. Marq and wife, Stephanie, have given them Peyton and Brady in California. They have a happy, healthy family and are truly blessed.
To fill the continued need to explore, Mike and Karen started RVing while the kids were still young and home. They have been to all 50 states, driving to the 49 mainland states, and flights to Hawaii. Retirement has allowed them time to visit and revisit their favorite spots both in the U.S. and abroad.
When not on the road, Karen enjoys crafting, book club, OLLI classes and having time to spend with friends. Mike enjoys directing bands and playing his French horn. He also does stained glass, woodworking and gardening.
About their 50 years together: Winnie the Pooh says, “A day spent with you is my favorite day. So today is my new favorite day.” We are so lucky to have had so many favorite days.
