Fachet's monster grand slam helps Mustangs sweep

Brian Fachet homered twice ­ including a grand slam that sailed overthe scoreboard and out of the ballpark ­ as the Medford Mustangs sweptits Area 4-opening doubleheader Monday at Miles Field.

Fachet went 4 for 6 and drove in eight runs in helping to demolish theGrants Pass Nuggets, 15-1 and 9-2.

In Game 1, Medford (9-0) tagged Nuggets' starter Wes Jones for five runsin the first inning.

After singles by Nate Philo and Alex Chavez and a walk to Shawn Walker,Kevin Follett was hit by a pitch, scoring Philo. Fachet followed with anRBI single and Ryan Petersen pushed another run across the plate on a groundout.

A Grants Pass error off the bat of the Mustangs' Jason Huish scored thefourth and fifth runs of the inning.

Then Fachet took over.

With the bases loaded in the second inning, Fachet literally sent theball out of the yard.

In the third inning, Fachet blasted a two-run shot to give Medford acommanding 12-0 lead.

The run support was more than enough for starter Hans Smith (3-0), whopitched a two-hitter and fanned six.

The Nuggets kept scrapping at the start of Game 2. Jake Kathol sluggeda two-run homer in the top of the first and Travis Garnier pitched well.

Garnier, an Illinois Valley product, held the Mustangs hitless throughthree innings before Medford busted loose in the fourth.

Walker led off with a triple, Follett walked and Fachet singled homeWalker.

Catcher Rich Dorman laid down a bunt single and Matt Chubb singled homeFachet and Dorman.

After a walk to K.C. Rumrey and an RBI single by Chavez, Walker collectedhis second triple of the inning, scoring Rumrey and Chavez.

Medford starter Steve Bechler (2-0) pitched a two-hitter and struck outnine.
