Rusedski rallies to oust Stark
WIMBLEDON, England Despite winning the first two sets behind abooming serve, Medford native Jonathan Stark was bounced from Wimbledonafter a furious comeback by Britain's Greg Rusedski as the tournament resumedSaturday after two days of rain delays.
With the tennis-starved crowd in an absolute frenzy, Rusedski ralliedto beat Stark, 4-6, 6-7 (11-9), 6-4, 6-3, 11-9, in a comeback made all themore stunning by the fact that he played with an injured back.
Having strained a muscle in his early morning practice session, Rusedskiwas in so much pain during the first set that he had to stop play and takea pain-killer. And when he jumped in his postmatch excitement, his shirtlifted to reveal the brace he had been forced to wrap around his mid-sectionfor support.
I was struggling a little bit with my fitness and John served unbelievablywell, said Rusedski, who had 36 aces and 23 double faults. Hewas probably averaging two aces a game.
