Kinney sizzles in junior golf
Competing a step above her age group, Medford's Tai Kinney fired a 5-over-par79 on Monday to take the first-round lead in the Southern Oregon JuniorChampionship at Rogue Valley Country Club.
Kinney, 14, leads her closest pursuer in the girls 15-17 age divisionby eight strokes in the Oregon Junior Golf Association event.
Nicole Keller of North Plains' Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club is second at 87.
In the 16-17 boys age group, Tim Feld of Cornelius' Forest Hills CountryClub leads with an even-par 72, a stroke ahead of Corvallis' Chad Burchand Eugene's Cameron Gory.
Lincoln City's Adam Martin shot 75 to lead the 14-15 boys, two strokesbetter than Ashland's Kyle Allred, who is tied with Colin Gory of Eugeneat 77.
In the 12-13 boys, Roseburg's Tyler Miller leads with a 77 followed byIllinois Valley's Ryan Defenbach, who shot 88.
Among boys ages 8-11, Medford's Jared Deley is six strokes back afterfiring a 56 on the par-37 nine-hole course. Corvallis' Brad Knoke leadsat 50, while Austin Jagels of Eugene also shot 56.
