Errors whittle down Timberjacks, 9-6
NWL home run Piatt leader hits 11th
KEIZER The Southern Oregon Timberjacks ended a three-game seriesagainst the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes on a sloppy note Thursday afternoon.
The Timberjacks committed a season-high seven errors in dropping therubber game of the series, 9-6.
Southern Oregon trailed 6-1 after the third inning, and cut the marginto 6-5 in the seventh. But a costly error in the bottom of the seventh ledto three unearned runs.
The Volcanoes rocked Timberjacks starting pitcher Marcus Jones for sixruns on eight hits in the first three innings.
Southern Oregon scored its first run the second when Adam Piatt singled,stole second, advanced to third on a ground out and scored on Hipolito Martinez'ssacrifice fly.
The Timberjacks scored single runs from the fourth through the seventhinnings, while reliever Chris Gorrell, who entered the game in the fourth,blanked the Volcanoes for three straight innings to allow Southern Oregonto creep back into the contest.
In the fourth, Roberto Vaz singled and eventually scored on a one-outsingle by Ed Farris. Victor Hernandez tripled in the fifth and came homeon Nathan Haynes' sacrifice fly. Piatt hit his league-leading 11th homerun of the season in the sixth. And Nicolas Sosa opened the seventh withhis first homer of the season to cut the deficit to 6-5.
But the costly error in the seventh prevented the Timberjacks from achievinganother come-from-behind victory.
Mark Mosier singled with one out to begin the Volcanoes rally. Pinchrunner Carlos Vanderrama stole second and went to third on a wild pitch.After Brett Casper struck out, shortstop Adam Robinson booted Will Ortero'sgrounder, allowing Vanderrama to score. Mike Byas followed with an RBI doubleand Travis Young produced an RBI single to complete the outburst.
Southern Oregon got its final run in the ninth when Jose Figueroa openedwith a walk and scored on Robinson's two-out single.
The Timberjacks return to Miles Field tonight for an eight-game homestand. Southern Oregon hosts Salem-Keizer for the first of three games at7:05 p.m. When the Volcanoes leaves, the Everett Aqua Sox come to town forfive games.
