Philo, others earn tourney awards
RAPID CITY, S.D. Short of returning home with the American LegionWorld Series championship, the Medford Mustangs carried off a duffelbagof awards following Tuesday's 11-8 loss to Sanford, Fla.
Center fielder and leadoff hitter Nate Philo was given the George RulonAward as Player of the Year for the Regionals and World Series, a stretchspanning 12 games.
Philo also carted off the Louisville Slugger Award for his .520 battingaverage in the tournament and claimed the Rawlings Big Stick Award for hits44 total bases.
His 11 doubles in national competition were a record as well.
Pitcher Steve Bechler, who tossed a whopping 11 innings Tuesday, receivedthe Bob Feller Award for his 37 playoff strikeouts.
Third baseman Brian Fachet, who crushed 24 home runs this season, wonthe Irvin Cowger Award for his 21 playoff RBIs.
Philo, Bechler and Fachet were joined on the tournament all-star teamby catcher Rich Dorman and first baseman Shawn Walker, who was listed asthe all-star designated hitter.
The Mustangs finished with 57 wins, four more than any previous Medfordsquad and Philo set a record for runs scored, Walker surpassed the RBI total.The team set records for home runs, runs and doubles.
Bechler surpassed the team record for strikeouts, while Hans Smith matchedBob Wolcott's 15-win total.
