Southern Oregon streak ends in a loss to Pomona

ARCATA, Calif. -- The Southern Oregon University volleyball team's 18-gamewinning streak that spanned six matches came to an abrupt halt on Saturday.

Playing in the Humboldt State Invitational, the Raiders were blastedin their opening game against highly touted Cal Poly-Pomona en route toa 15-2, 3-15, 15-5, 11-15, 16-14 loss.

Southern Oregon rebounded from the loss with a 15-9, 15-11, 18-16 victoryover Humboldt to finish 3-1 and capture second place in the six-team, round-robinevent.

Middle blocker Susan Rodinsky and outside hitter Sherry Short were namedto the all-tournament team for the Raiders.

Southern Oregon coach Paul Elliott said the Raiders played well againstCal-Poly but were simply routed in the opening game.

They are just that good, he said. We were a littleflat, but we were also like deer in the headlights watching those girlsin that first game.

In the final game of the second match, freshman Christine Wurtz did mostof the damage for Southern Oregon (7-1), recording 10 kills in that gamealone.

The Raiders are at home against Humboldt at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
