Worden scores twice as Pirates clip IV, 2-0

TALENT -- Phoenix registered its first District 6 soccer victory Saturdayby shutting out Illinois Valley 2-0.

Matt Worden scored the first of his two goals from 6 yards out.

At the 60-minute mark, Worden headed his second goal of the day intothe net from — yards out with an assist from Swedish foreign exchange studentAlexander Ahluvist.

The Pirates outshot the Cougars 16-7. Anthony Machado registered theshutout in goal.

Phoenix coach Dennis Flenner lauded the play of Chris Ronemus, who usuallyplays halfback but filled in for fullback Robbie Goodkin. Goodkin injuredan ankle at Henley on Thursday and hopes to return this week.

Everybody played tremendous soccer today, Flenner said.

ST. MARY'S 5, BONANZA — -- At Bonanza, senior forward Jake Smith scoredthree goals as St. Mary's (1-0-1) notched its first District 6 victory.

After a scoreless first half, Bonanza got the game's first goal by LeanneWiersma on a corner kick. Wiersma took the corner kick and it deflectedinto the net off St. Mary's goalie Andrew Lunt's knee at the 46th minute.

St. Mary's evened the score on Smith's penalty kick at the 65th minute.Smith scored again two minutes later to give the Crusaders a 2-1 lead.

Then the flood gates opened as Brendan Wilson, Brandon Frankel and Smithall scored in an eight-minute span.

St. Mary's had a 23-10 advantage in shots on goal.

NORTH VALLEY 2, HENLEY — -- At Merlin, Eddie Rochholz nailed a directpenalty kick and added an assisted goal as North Valley edged Henley.

Henley registered its goal when North Valley's Danny Mancia inadvertentlyknocked the ball into his team's goal while trying to clear the ball forhis goalie.

HIDDEN VALLEY 4, ROGUE RIVER — -- At Hidden Valley, Ben Milkovich scoredtwice as Hidden Valley drubbed Rogue River.

Milkovich's first goal was scored from 30 yards out and was assistedby Denny Palmer. His second goal came from 10 yards out with the help ofDan Andrews.

Aaron Johnson also scored two goals for the Mustangs.
