SOC shows running parity

ROSEBURG -- The Southern Oregon Conference pre-district cross countymeet demonstrated the potential for a real dogfight to determine who willqualify for the Nov. — state meet.

South Medford's girls and Klamath Union's boys won by slender marginsThursday on a wet course at Stewart Park. The SOC meet is scheduled forOct. 25 on the same course, with the top two teams and top seven individualsadvancing to the state meet.

The one conclusion I can draw is the district meet will be veryexciting and very close, South Medford coach Bill Rowan said. Thetop four girls teams will be right there for the top two spots. Again we'relooking at three boys teams battling it out.

South placed six girls in the top 15 to win team championship with 47points. Ashland followed with 55 and Klamath Union was third at 62.

Ashland freshman Paris Edwards was the individual leader on the 5,000-metercourse, timed in 19 minutes, 25 seconds. Teammate Anita Sindelar finishedthird.

Sophomore Sarah Eyman was the top South Medford girl with a fifth-placefinish. Erica Schwendener of South took sixth.

Eagle Point's John Lucas won for the third time in as many races. Hismark of 16:19 was impressive considering the course conditions and a fallhe took during the race.

Klamath Union, with three finishers in the top seven, edged South Medfordin the team competition, 45-56. Grants Pass was third with 77.

South was led by the fourth- and fifth-place finishes of Tim Meador andPerry Custance.

This meet gives the kids a chance to look at what their competitionis, said Rowan, and gives them a look at the district courseand how to run it.
