Yates-led Raiders pull way from Pioneers
PORTLAND -- Griff Yates ran for 194 yards and two touchdowns to leadSouthern Oregon past Lewis & Clark 39-9 on Saturday.
Southern Oregon (1-1) got off to a fast start when Dan Munoz caught Pioneerpunter Rob Broberg in the end zone for a safety.
John Colombero followed with a 28-yard field goal. The first quarterended with a 39-yard pass from Mike Long to Dan Walters, putting SouthernOregon ahead 11-0.
The Pioneers (0-2) came within two points near the end of the secondquarter with a 31-yard field goal by Miller followed by a 6-yard scoringstrike from Drew Jordan to Aaron Schmidt.
We got a little flat emotionally in the second quarter and Lewis& Clark got back in the game, Southern Oregon coach Jeff Olsonsaid.
But Griff Yates scored in the last seven seconds of the half, puttingthe Raiders ahead 18-9 at the break.
That was a real gut check for our team and opened up some breathingroom, said Olson. At halftime, we stressed that it was timefor our seniors to show leadership and take over.
The Raiders responded by limiting the Pioneers to 23 plays and no firstdowns in the second half.
R.J. Josephson of Eagle Point spearheaded the Raider defense with eighttackles, three for loses, and two sacks.
We felt we were stronger than them up front, said Olson.Our front seven challenged them. We put pressure on their quarterbacksall day.
Yates scored on a 2-yard run to open the Raiders' scoring in the secondhalf.
The Raiders scored two more touchdowns in the fourth period as TommySelden scored on a 42-yard run and Dan Munoz tossed a 29-yard TD pass toMike Geske.
Not only did Yates have a big day, but Seldon also went over the centurymark rushing with 139 yards. The Raiders totalled 349 yards rushing and544 net yards.
