South flourishes at major cross country meet

EUGENE -- Lifetime-best times were the order of the day for South MedfordHigh School runners here Saturday.

South's top five boys and four of its top six girls registered personalrecords under perfect running conditions during the Northwest Cross CountryClassic at Lane Community College.

The performances earned the Panther girls a third-place finish and theboys a fourth in the team standings.

Some 35 teams and 400 runners competed in the prestigious event.

Senior Tim Meador finished ninth in the boys competition in 16 minutes,one second -- the second-fastest time in school history. The late LanceTooke established the school standard of 15:40 in 1988.

Sophomore Perry Custance (11th, 16:07) was close behind on the 5,000-metercourse. Jed Baurers (56th, 17:11), Creighton Helms (58th, 17:12) and AllenHarrison (69th, 17:19) also established PRs for the Panthers.

Eagle Point's John Lucas finished fourth in 15:59 and Crater's Max Kingwas seventh in 15:53.

Thomas Jesse of Mountain View High of Bend was the boys winner in 15:21.

Sarah Eyman and Amois Gonzalez provided the South girls with a strong1-2 punch. Eyman was 11th in 19:43 and Gonzalez 14th in 19:50 -- the firsttime either of them has been under 20 minutes.

Erica Schwendener, who has been South's No. — runner this year, was battlinga cold but still ran 20:15 to take 31st. Rachael Tarshes was 32nd in a lifetimebest of 20:20 and Janette Martin was 38th in a personal best 20:31.

It was a great day for our kids, South Medford coach BillRowan said. Both the boys and the girls established themselves astop-10 teams in the state.

Amy Nickerson of Coquille outdueled Rogue River's Jody Minard for topindividual honors in the girls race. Nickerson finished in 18:40, Minardin 18:52.

The Jesuit girls won the team title.

Hector Flores of Phoenix was the top local boys runner in the Class 3Aranks. He finished 52nd in 17:08.

STANFORD INVITATIONAL -- At Stanford University, freshman Paris Edwards(18:32) came in first place for Ashland in the girls Division — competitionto help Ashland reach fifth place with 178 points out of 24 teams.

Martina Patella (20:24) placed fourth for the St.Mary's girls to leadthe Crusaders to sixth place for Division 5.

For the Ashland boys, Kas Lane (17:53) placed 64th while Jason Magruder(17:57) placed 68th to help take 14th place.

Ashland's boys placed 14th out of 26 schools with the help from 81strunner Brenden Jones (18:11), 82nd Taylor Clark (18:13), 86th Alexis Shimanoff(18:17), 89th Taylor Smith (18:20), and 124th Mike Straub (19:11).

St. Mary's boys runners got a 21st place from Trevor Coolidge (18:19),followed by 58th Josh Purkeypile (20:06), 71st Jared Hooper (20:51), 82ndKevin Mauseth (22:10), 84th Tim Gibson (22:21), 91st Robbie Watson (23:18),and 94th James Howard (25:01).

Other runners for St. Mary's girls were 15th place April Strickland (22:06),31st Emily Jensen (24:03), 37th Melani Crume (24:41), 55th Brooke Densmore(27:29), and 57th Gretchen Johnson (27:43).
