Wozniak's OT goal lifts Pirates
MURPHY -- With a 2-0 lead and just seven minutes remaining in the match,Phoenix High boys soccer coach Dennis Flenner was feeling somewhat comfortableSaturday.
But comfort turned to consternation for Flenner and his Pirates whenHidden Valley exploded for two quick goals, forcing an overtime in the District6 match.
Dan Wozniak saved the day for Phoenix when he scored on a penalty kickin the extra session, allowing the Pirates to sneak off with a 3-2 victory.
These kids are making an old man out of me, Flenner saidafter the Pirates, the state's No. 9-ranked Class 3A boys team, improvedto 4-2 in District 6 play. We had them on the ropes in the first halfbut we didn't put them away.
Hidden Valley's Jesse Johnson scored on a deflected shot from 18 yardsout with just 20 seconds left in regulation to send the match into a 20-minuteovertime.
In the extra session, Hidden Valley nearly scored first but Ben Jaramillo'sshot hit the bottom of the crossbar and bounced down.
Seven minutes into the OT Alexander Ahlqvist of the Pirates was takendown in the box on a breakaway, awarding a penalty kick to the Pirates.Dan Wozniak thumped the ball into the left side of the net on the PK.
He's got ice running through his veins, Flenner said of Wozniak.Everyone was going nuts but he was as calm as can be.
Davey Grantland hammered in Phoenix's first goal following a free kickjust five minutes into the match and Wozniak made it 2-0 when he knockedin a shot off a Hidden Valley defender.
Saturday marked the fifth time in six matches that Phoenix has been onthe road.
ST. MARY'S 4, ROGUE RIVER 0 -- At Rogue River, Jake Smith tallied twogoals to lead the Crusaders.
Smith and Gabe Schonerd scored goals that gave St. Mary's a 2-0 halftimelead.
A Smith second-half goal and a Rogue River own goal decided the finalmargin of victory.
The victory improves the Crusaders' league mark to 3-2-1, while RogueRiver fell to 0-5-1.
NORTH VALLEY 4, ILLINOIS VALLEY — -- At Merlin, North Valley startedout slow in the first half, giving Illinois Valley a goal from a penaltykick in the first seven minutes of the game.
In the second half, North Valley woke up. Casey Shaw scored in the 23rdminute on a cross from Eddie Rochholz.
Four minutes later Jason Britton made a goal with an assist by BrendenPhillips.
Two minutes after that Britton tagged on another goal as Rochholz crossedthe ball over in front of the goal box and Britton one-touched it in tomake the score 3-1.
The final goal came from a corner kick by Britton and was slammed intothe box by Jeff Bass.
Outstanding defensive players were Neil Duggan and goalie Josh Saemanwith six saves.
HENLEY 0, BONANZA 0 -- At Bonanza, Henley outshot winless Bonanza 15-8in the District 6 overtime game.
