Cascade Christian remains unbeaten in the Holy Bowl

WHITE CITY -- For more than three and a half quarters, Cascade Christianwas in complete command of the fourth Holy Bowl football game against crosstownrival St. Mary's.

The Crusaders hadn't got the ball past midfield and only had one firstdown up to that point. Then St. Mary's connected on a long pass play fora touchdown and recovered a fumble deep in Challengers territory.

Suddenly a ho-hum game took on some drama. Could winless St. Mary's somehowpull out a victory to salvage its season?

Nope, that wasn't meant to be. The underdog Crusaders couldn't capitalizeon the fumble recovery as Cascade Christian's defense stiffened to preservea 15-8 victory to close out the Big Fir League season Friday at the V.A.Domiciliary's Memorial Stadium.

This is our biggest game of the year, Cascade Christian juniorlineman Tim Milojevich said. We haven't lost to St. Mary's. So weweren't going to start this year.

Milojevich anchored a defensive line that held the Crusaders (0-9, 0-6Big Fir) to 15 yards rushing and no first downs on the ground.

We came out with a lot of fire, said Milojevich. Wewanted to show we were serious.

The Challengers' defense made an impact right way when Andrew Gettmanintercepted St. Mary's quarterback Rick Gibson on the game's first playfrom scrimmage and returned it to the Crusaders 39. Mark Huttema completedthe 12-play drive with a fourth-down, 1-yard touchdown run. Sophomore quarterbackWill Vanderstoel, who had two runs for 18 yards to help set up the TD, ranin the two-point conversion.

After St. Mary's went three plays and out on its next possession, CascadeChristian's offense went to work again.

This time the Challengers (2-7, 2-4 Big Fir) drove 62 yards in six playsand scored a touchdown with 2:06 remaining in the opening quarter. Vanderstoelcovered the final 16 yards on a quarterback keeper.

The game's momentum turned when junior J.P. Naumes choked off a Challengers'sfourth-quarter scoring opportunity at the St. Mary's 13 with a pass interception. Then six plays later Naumes hauled in a Gibson pass at the Challenger 40and outran the secondary for a 54-yard touchdown play.

I saw someone on me, said Naumes, but some fool raninto him, so I had an easy trot for a TD. After I got that interceptionwe really got pumped up. If we had won, our season wouldn't have been atotal failure.

When Patrick Withers recovered Nick Ristow's fumble at the Challengers28 with four minutes remaining, St. Mary's had an opportunity to tie ortake the lead.

But Mark Harmon sacked Gibson for a 3-yard loss on fourth down at theCascade 25 and Crusaders chance to complete the season on a high note cameto an end.St. Mary's0 0 0 8 -- 8
