Chico State pulls away from Southern Oregon

CHICO, Calif. -- Southern Oregon University stayed close to Chico Statefor most of the first half Tuesday, but the Raiders couldn't keep pace withthe Wildcats in dropping a 101-67 men's basketball decision.

They were very, very athletic, Southern Oregon coach BrianMcDermott said. We had trouble controlling them in transition.

Chico State (2-1) led 39-30 at halftime, then shot 60 percent from thefield in the second half to take command of the game.

We kind of let them get off at the start of the second half,said McDermott. They took us out of our offensive stuff. We did notcontrol tempo.

Junior forward Chris Schmerbach of Klamath Falls led the Raiders with14 points, while Barron Lacy and Clason Whitney each added 10 points. Juniorguard Dave Arbow hauled in a team-high 10 rebounds

Marquis Smith paced the Wildcats with 20 points.

Southern Oregon (1-1) plays the second of four straight road games Thursdayat the University of Portland.

OREGON TECH 97, SIMPSON 61 -- At Klamath Falls, Oregon Tech placed fiveplayers in double figures to win its third consecutive game to open theseason.

Owls forward Saif Abdur-Rahman led the attack with 22 points, while MattFoster added 19 points and 11 rebounds.

Former North Medford High players Josh Woodson and Jamie Hammericksencontributed to the victory. Woodson scored two points, grabbed two reboundsand had three assists in 15 minutes of action, while Hammericksen scoredfive points and had three rebounds in 16 minutes.
