Rennick finishes prep career with District 6 honor
Every time Liz Rennick stepped on a soccer pitch for Phoenix High Schoolin 1997, she had a bull's eye planted squarely on the back of her uniform.
Though Rennick was the focal point of every opposing defense, the seniorcenter-midfielder still found ways to lay their best plans to waste.
For her efforts, Rennick was the first Phoenix girl to be named District6 player of the year in all-star balloting of the league's coaches.
It really says something of how the league viewed her in that role, said Phoenix coach Dan Sporrer. She had all sorts of pressure, andshe responded to it.
Sporrer, whose club posted a 6-6-3 mark, was tabbed co-coach of the yearfor the second straight season, along with Rogue River's Dean Smith, wholed the Chieftains to their first-ever winning season and league title.
I think it shows his persistence and is a great compliment to hisprogram, said Sporrer of Smith, whose team was 6-1 in league. Hereally deserves it.
Three of Smith's players, juniors Liz Lewis and Lauren Frank and seniorJackie Gantzer were named to the first team.
Rennick is no stranger to the District 6 first-team all-star list. Thisyear's selection marks her fourth-straight first-team appearance and third-straightunanimous selection.
In District 6 action, Rennick either scored a goal or had an assist inall seven league games. Her 15 goals also accounted for 30 percent of thePirates' season tallies.
Her position is designed as a playmaker, said Sporrer. Shefulfilled that role way past my expectations.
Joining Rennick on the first team were senior teammates Tori Sadler andEmily Lacy, a goalkeeper; Hidden Valley seniors Becky Hill, Emily Bucknerand Rachel Muneyyirci, Henley senior Laura Davis and North Valley juniorJanna Pilcher.
