Raider wrestlers fall

ASHLAND -- Southern Oregon lost the first four bouts and were unableto climb out of the hole as UC Davis registered its first-ever victory overSouthern Oregon in 23 meetings dating back to 1962-63.

The Pac-10 Aggies (2-2) defeated both SOU Escobar brothers to start thematch, including a 5-3 David Yi overtime decision over All-American TysonEscobar at 126.

The Aggies then cruised to a 13-0 lead before true freshman Dan Sturgellcut the margin with a second-period pin of David Lupinsky in the 150-poundbout. Sturgell, a two-time Class 2A champion from Warrenton, is the firstRaider this decade to win his first collegiate bout by pin.

Junior 158-pound transfer Matt Armstrong followed Sturgell with a decisionthat closed the gap to 13-9, but the Aggies sent the Raiders to a season-openingloss at McNeal Pavilion by snatching the subsequent four bouts.

It was only Southern Oregon's second home-opening loss since the 1970-71season.

The Raiders host more than 10 teams in the Belcastro Open all day today.
