Raiders miss big men in loss to Humboldt

ARCATA, Calif. -- Southern Oregon University men's basketball team turnedin its worse performance Tuesday against a team it beat to open the season. And the reason was obvious.

Playing without big men Ryan Valley and Amos Baker, the Raiders got poundedinside en route to a 77-49 road loss to Humboldt State.

The Raiders snapped a 20-game losing streak when they defeated the Lumberjacks77-65 at McNeal Pavilion Nov. 16, but have lost four straight since.

The last two of those loses came at the hands of NCAA Division I teams,University of Portland and Utah State. But this was a game that was supposedto get the Raiders back on track.

With the absence of Valley and Baker, the Raiders got outrebounded 41-22and the Lumberjacks shot a sizzling 59 percent from the field. SouthernOregon could only manage 29 percent shooting.

Valley, a 6-foot-8 junior center, and Baker, a 6-6 junior forward, werenot in the lineup because they missed the team van, according to SOU sportsinformation director Rich Rosenthal.

After leading 36-26 at halftime, the Lumberjacks used a 10-1 run midwaythrough the second half to break open the game.

I was very pleased with the intensity tonight, especially the defensiveeffort, Humboldt State coach Tom Wood said. Anytime you holda team under 50 points, you know your defense was there.

Humboldt State center Kieron Slaughter and forward Dave Demyan repeatedlyworked free underneath and capitalized on high percentage shots.

Slaughter led a balanced scoring effort with 13 points. He also addeda team-high eight rebounds. Demyan added 12 points, while teammates SeanMcCartney and Paul Burgess each contributed eight.

Southern Oregon junior Clason Whitney came off the bench to lead theRaiders with 15 points. Whitney's three 3-point goals helped the Raidersstay close.

When the Lumberjacks opened a 14-point lead early in the second half,Whitney connected on consecutive jumpers to cut the margin to nine. ButSouthern Oregon could not sustain the attack.
