Raiders rally to edge Simpson

ASHLAND -- Tom Chipps nailed a crucial 3-point shot with 5 minutes, 50seconds remaining as Southern Oregon University rallied for a 59-56 victoryover stubborn Simpson College in the opening round of the Rodeway Inn InvitationalBasketball Tournament on Friday.

The victory earned the Raiders a berth in tonight's championship gameagainst Willamette, which beat Oregon Tech 85-75 earlier Friday.

Tip-off is 7:30 p.m.

Simpson built a 12-point lead with 10 minutes remaining and still hadan eight-point cushion with seven minutes to play.

But the Raiders (2-4) made some big stops defensively and Chipps' 3-pointbasket finally put them ahead to stay.

Scott Logue paced SOU with 13 points, while Chipps, Chris Schmerbachand Barron Lacy added 10 apiece for the Raiders.

Things didn't look good midway through the second half, but theguys played tough defense the whole way and eventually it paid off,SOU coach Brian McDermott said. Simpson made some very difficult shotsfrom 3-point range earlier but they finally started to miss them at theend.

Simpson (3-2) was 10-for-20 from 3-point territory at one point beforeits final six attempts.

Mikael Lujan had 18 points and Derrick Fleck added 17 for Simpson, anNAIA Division II school based in Redding, Calif.

The Raiders will welcome back two starters tonight when they meet Willamette.Ryan Valley, a 6-foot-8 center, and 6-6 power forward Amos Baker sat outthe last two games for disciplinary reasons.

WILLAMETTE 85, OREGON TECH 75 -- Shawn Guhr poured in 27 points to leadthe Bearcats over the Owls in the first game of the Rodeway Inn Tournament.

Matt Foster led Oregon Tech with 24 points.

SOUTHERN OREGON 76, COLLEGE OF NOTRE DAME 39 -- At Arcata, Calif., NadaJanackovic scored 21 points and collected eight rebounds to power the Raiderwomen to the victory in the opening round of the Humboldt Classic.

The Raiders meet host Humboldt State in today's title game. The Lumberjacksdowned Willamette 64-58.

Denise Berry added 11 points and 11 rebounds for the Raiders, who wonfor the sixth time in seven games.

SOU led just 13-9 with 11 minutes to play in the first half but wenton a 26-11 run and led 39-20 at the intermission.

Wendi Lamb scored all eight of her points in the second half on 3-of-4shooting from the field and 2-of-2 marksmanship from the free throw line.The SOU point guard also had six assists and five steals.
