South Medford girls thump Cavers

DAVE DAUGHERTY

SOC roundup

Defense is the cornerstone for many teams and the South Medford girls basketball team was no different Friday night.

The Panthers' stingy defense held Grants Pass to just 14 second-half points and South ran off with a 53-35 Southern Oregon Conference victory.

The win improves South to 4-7 in league play and 9-9 overall, while the Cavers fell to 3-8 in the SOC.

Our press started wearing on them, South Medford coach Andrea Wegner said. — I think they started to get tired and started making mistakes.

Lynn Wooton led South Medford with 10 points and five rebounds, while freshmen Emily Perttu and Heather Fossen added nine points each.

They just keep better every game, Wegner said of her two freshmen. There's no huge pressure on them but they're getting good playing time and maturing very well.

Kaci Williams led the Cavers with nine points.
