St. Mary's knocks off Oakland

The St. Mary's boys basketball team picked a good time to turn in its most complete performance of the season.

We played four good quarters tonight for the first time this season, assistant coach John Eagle said Friday.

The Crusaders were rewarded with a 66-58 upset of Big Fir League leader Oakland at St. Mary's. It was the Oakers' first Big Fir loss.

Mike Lurie scored 15 of his 17 points in the first half for St. Mary's (11-6, 5-2 Big Fir), which also got 16 points from Brendan Wilson and 13 from David Naumes.

St. Mary's built an eight-point lead in the first quarter but couldn't hold it and the game was tight until the Crusaders pulled ahead for good midway through the final quarter.

Oakland (6-1) hurt itself from the foul line, making just — of 21 attempts in the game. Meanwhile, St. Mary's sank 23 of 37 foul shots, including 11 of 17 in the fourth quarter.

CASCADE CHRISTIAN 71, RIDDLE 80 -- At Riddle, senior wing Thye Schuyler burned the Challengers for 29 points while Mike Brown dished out 11 assists for Riddle.

Riddle (6-1 Big Fir) used a half-court press to take control of a tight game at the start of the fourth quarter.

The Challengers, who got 19 points from Joe Moxley and 16 from Tim Alvarez, dropped to 3-4 in the Big Fir.

CASCADE CHRISTIAN 54, RIDDLE 41 -- At Riddle, Crystal Tait and Natalie Peck scored 16 points each for the Challengers, who benefited from Riddle's horrid free-throw shooting.

Riddle made just 10 of 27 free throws in the 13-point loss as Cascade Christian improved to a league best 6-1 in the Big Fir.

Riddle dropped to 2-5 in Big Fir action.

OAKLAND 60, ST. MARY'S 25 -- Senior Christal Rainey and freshman Lani Brophy combined for 21 of St. Mary's 25 points as the host Crusaders suffered their seventh Big Fir loss in seven outings.

Brophy added seven rebounds and six steals.

Oakland post Lori Baimbridge led all scorers with 26 points.

Jessica Kraemer scored 12 points, 10 rebounds and 12 steals in her first triple-double of the season for the Cougars (6-1 Skyline A).

New Hope dropped to 2-5 in Skyline A action with the loss.
