Cascade free throws tag St. Mary's with loss

Don Jenkins sank three free throws in the final 23 seconds Saturday night as Cascade Christian held off St. Mary's late charge for a 46-43 Big Fir League boys basketball victory.

St. Mary's (11-7, 5-3 BFL) took its only lead on Brendan Wilson's layup with 46 seconds to play at the Grace Christian School gym. But Cascade (9-1, 4-4 BFL) sophomore guard Andy Kimmelshue made two free throws with 33 seconds to play to knot the score.

St. Mary's missed its next field goal attempt and Jenkins was fouled with 23 seconds left in the game. He sank both free throws to make it 45-43.

After a St. Mary's missed shot, Joe Moxley snagged the rebound for Cascade. Jenkins was fouled again with eight seconds to play. He hit the first shot, but a lane violation gave the Crusaders a chance to tie.

J.P. Naumes launched a shot from the top of the key that went in and out at the buzzer.

Anytime you can beat your cross-town rival, it's a key victory, Cascade Christian coach Brian Morse said. It was a very emotional win for us. We came off a tough loss (Friday) at Riddle and we really needed this one to be back in the playoff hunt.

For the second night in a row, 6-foot-5 junior center Tim Alvarez made a key contribution. Alvarez turned out for basketball for the first time last season and didn't make the starting lineup until January. On the heels of a 16-point outing against Riddle, Alvarez scored 12 points, pulled down a career-high 10 rebounds and blocked three shots.

Junior forward Tim Milovjeich had 10 rebounds for Cascade, which outrebounded the Crusaders, 34-20. Kimmelshue converted all six of his free throws in the fourth quarter, as the Challengers avenged last month's 52-29 setback at St. Mary's.

David Naumes topped the Crusaders with 18 points.
