Glendale trips Cascade on late shot

Heading into the fourth quarter, the Cascade Christian girls basketball team had the Big Fir League-leading Glendale Pirates right where it wanted them: Down by seven points.

Then the bottom fell out. The Challengers scored just four points in the final period and Glendale's Sarah Maurer hit a game-winning jumper with three seconds left to lock up a 51-49 victory at Grace Christian School.

We just could not buy a basket, said Cascade coach Loren King. Part of it is Glendale played good defense. They did a good job on us in the fourth quarter. We had the shots, they just didn't drop.

When you can't hit in the fourth quarter and you watch the lead disappear that's tough. Part of it is you play tentative and you play not to lose the game.

The Challengers (14-9, 9-4 Big Fir) have already clinched a playoff berth headed into today's regular-season finale against Riddle at Grace Christian.

Rebekah Bresnan scored 23 points for Glendale, which clinched at least a share of the Big Fir title.

Natalie Peck had 17 for Cascade, which fell two games behind Glendale and a game behind both North Douglas and Yoncalla.
