Owls avenge January loss to SOU men

KLAMATH FALLS -- Bob Townsend scored 28 points and grabbed seven rebounds as the Oregon Tech men's basketball team avenged an earlier loss to Southern Oregon.

The Raiders (15-17, 9-9 Cascade Conference) held a 36-35 lead at halftime, but were outscored 49-30 in the second half.

Tom Chipps scored 12 points to lead Southern Oregon, which shot 54 percent from the floor in the first half but only 40 percent afterwards. Jacques Francis added 10 points for the Raiders, who lost for the 23rd straight time at OIT since the 1984-85 season.

Oregon Tech (20-9, 13-5), which had a 13-game winning streak against the Raiders snapped by a 71-70 defeat on Jan. 20, shot 64.3 percent in the second half after making just 15 of 37 shots in the first half.

TRACK -- REDDING, Calif. -- The Southern Oregon University track team got its season under way Friday in the non-scoring Golden Valley Relays at Shasta College.

Southern Oregon freshman Nicole Irons won the women's pole vault with a respectable mark of 9 feet, 6 inches. Other Raider women with good marks were Janae Helgerson, who placed first in the javelin with a throw of 125-feet-11 inches, and former South Medford High standout Leslie McQueen, who won the 100-meter hurdles at 16.4 seconds.

In men's, senior Jim Hagemann uncorked a winning throw in the javelin with a mark of 185-9. Shot putter Paul Steenwolk won with a mark of 50-11, while Landis Reed turned in the best 100-meter high hurdle time of 15.3.

The kids have been working hard so it's good to get a meet in, Southern Oregon coach Monty Cartwright said. Our goal is to get ready for our season opener, the Artie Sullivan Invitational, on March 7.

Southern Oregon will host an all-comers meet at noon next Saturday at Raider Stadium.

TENNIS -- The Southern Oregon University women's tennis team won its second match in as many days on Friday with a 5-4 win over Northwest Nazarene in Nampa, Idaho.

Katie Fankhanel, Kristin Williams and Mallika Miller scored singles wins for the Raiders. Tori Waggoner and Miller scored one doubles win and Fankhanel and Williams combined on another.

The Raiders (3-1) got a forfeit-filled 6-1 win over Central Oregon Community College in Bend on Thursday, winning five matches by default.
