Quinney beats Jacobsen to claim Lithia Open title

Mark Quinney was joking with people about how long it's been since he has made any money at the Lithia Motors Southern Oregon Open tennis tournament.

The 27-year-old Eugene resident doesn't have to joke anymore after claiming the men's open singles title with a straight sets victory over Bremerton, Wash., resident Eric Jacobsen, 6-2, 6-2, on Sunday at the Southern Oregon Tennis Club.

The Lithia title is Quinney's second and snaps the two-year stranglehold of Jan-Michael Gambill, who missed this years tournament to compete in the Australian Open.

It also marks the second straight year Jacobsen has played the bridesmaid in the open final. Last year the 31-year-old Jacobsen fell to Gambill in the finale.

Quinney rolled into the championship match by beating Portland's Adam Gagnon, 6-2, 6-0 in one semifinal match, while Jacobsen ousted Eugene's John DeVorss, 6-4, 7-6.

Tara Livesay, a 15-year-old Lakeridge High student claimed her first Lithia Open title by dispatching Angie Cummins of Vancouver, Wash., 6-1, 7-5 in the women's open final.

In the men's open doubles final Gagnon gained a measure of redemption by pairing with fellow Portland resident Chris Apzet to win the title over DeVorss and partner Len Spencer of Eugene, 6-4, 7-5.

In the open mixed doubles final Kevin Kauffman and Kim Denig, both of Medford, used their experience to win the title.

Kauffman and Denig defeated North Medford High boys player Deryk Inn and South Medford girls team member Colleen Cohee, 6-2, 6-2.
