South girls, Ashland boys win Southern Oregon ski

MOUNT ASHLAND -- Ashland's boys and South Medford's girls closed out the Southern Oregon ski season with giant slalom victories here Friday.

Saturday's slalom race was canceled because of poor weather and road conditions, leaving the Grizzlies atop the boys standings and Panthers first in girls.

Senior Paul Caswell of North Medford was awarded the boys slalom championship. Junior Eric Harris of Ashland was named giant slalom and combined champion.

Senior Melody Buell of Ashland was the giant slalom, slalom and combined champion.

Ashland, Lakeview and North Medford's boys and the South Medford and Ashland girls teams earned trips to the March 5-6 state meet at Mount Hood Ski Bowl (giant slalom) and Timberline Lodge (slalom).

Freshman Zack Rote of St. Mary's and South Medford junior Brad Galpern earned individual trips to state as did Crater freshman Kara Ray and Lakeview senior Erin Gillogley.

In Friday's giant slalom, Buell had the first and third fastest times on the Tempest run, recording a 50.26-second effort on her first trip down and coming back with a 51.32 effort. Erin Gillogley of Lakeview had the second fastest mark of 51.31, but finished fourth when her second effort ballooned to 57.18.

Harris logged identical 50.27 efforts en route to a 1:40.54 clocking. The fastest single mark was 50.18 by Lakeview's Josh Paull on his second effort.
