Foul-plagued Cascade girls beaten by Yoncalla

YONCALLA -- Cascade Christian girls basketball coach Loren King stressed to his squad earlier in the week that the Challengers needed production from other players to complement leaders Natalie Peck and Crystal Tait.

Sophomore guard Katie Longan did just that Friday in a Big Fir League road game against Yoncalla.

But despite Longan's career-high 19 points, the Challengers couldn't overcome serious foul problems and dropped a 63-61 decision to the Eagles.

Fouls were the big difference, King said. It hurts your defense when you have to back off.

That's exactly what happened when Shawna Bendele drove the baseline to hit the winning shot with two seconds showing.

They were very, very aggressive, said King. They drove to the hoop because we had just about everybody in foul trouble. I thought we were looking at overtime, but they got the shot to go down.

The Challengers had post Christine McCandless foul out and Peck had to spend considerable time on the bench because of foul difficulties. Cascade ended the game with Peck and two other players with four fouls.

But Longan picked up some of the slack with four of Cascade's season-high eight 3-pointers.

They left Katie open and she took advantage of it, said King. We needed every bit of it.
