Rogue River contains Prewitt in 50-40 win over Phoenix

ROGUE RIVER -- Sarah Prewitt won the battle of inside players in the first half, but sixth-ranked Rogue River put the clamps on the 6-foot Phoenix center in the second half and came away with a 50-40 Skyline Conference victory.

We made some adjustments at halftime and put more pressure on their ball handlers in the half-court situation, Rogue River coach Dan Mortinson said. And that made it more difficult for their guards to get the ball inside.

Whatever changes Mortinson implemented were effective as the Chieftains (15-2, 8-1 Skyline) held Phoenix (5-12, 5-4 Skyline) to 17 points in the second half.

Prewitt, who scored 10 points by intermission, was held to five points in the second half by Rogue River forward Sarah Jones.

She did an excellent job of defending Sarah Prewitt, Mortinson said. I think Sarah (Jones) could have had more points but she was concentrating on defense.

Jones led four Rogue River players in double figures with 13 points. She added six rebounds and four steals.

While Rogue River was limiting the Pirates' offense, the Chieftains got their own attack cranked up. Rogue River connected on 11-of-19 shots from the field in the second half.

We picked up the tempo of the game by pushing the ball and got the momentum back, Mortinson said.

Junior center Shae Wright made a significant contribution to the Chieftains' fourth straight win. Wright had 11 points, 12 rebounds and three assists.
