Grants Pass squeaks by North

GRANTS PASS -- Reed Sorensen's buzzer-beating basket lifted Grants Pass to a 68-67 Southern Oregon Conference boys basketball victory over North Medford on Saturday night.

The triumph at North Middle School kept the Cavemen's slim playoff hopes alive and put North's post-season prospects in peril. Grants Pass improved to 7-6 with three SOC games remaining as it avenged a 55-36 loss at North. The Black Tornado slipped to 9-5 in the SOC.

North took a 67-66 lead with nine seconds to play when Jeff Zimmer buried his fifth 3-pointer in six tries.

Grants Pass called timeout. Then Obie Strickler blew past the Tornado's token backcourt pressure, penetrated the lane, drew three defenders and dished off to Sorensen who scored from point-blank range.

Sorensen scored 16 of his 17 points, including 8-of-8 at the foul line, in the fourth quarter, while Strickler led all scorers with 23 points. Zimmer led North with 21 points, while Jesse Fowler chipped in with 14.
