Raiders hold on to claim 65-61 victory

ASHLAND -- In a battle of top-10 teams, the Southern Oregon University women's basketball team survived a late Albertson rally to win 65-61 at McNeal Pavilion on Saturday night.

The No. 2-ranked Raiders had a 10-point lead on No. 10-ranked Albertson early in the second half before Albertson began chipping away.

Maria Cook's jumper with 51 seconds remaining brought Albertson within one at 60-59 but Megan Winchester drained her second 3-pointer on the Raiders' next possession to put it away.

The win clinched a bye for the Raiders in the first round of the Cascade Conference playoffs and guaranteed Southern at least one playoff game at home, Feb. 27 at 7 p.m.

I think were playing very well right now we just have to be consistent and play every game one at a time and take each and every possession one at time, said SOU coach Shirley Huyett. If we do that we can play with anyone at this level.

Southern Oregon concludes its season with a meaningless game at Eastern Oregon on Feb. 21.
