Southern Oregon women record 25th win

LA GRANDE -- The Southern Oregon University women's basketball team equaled last year's single-season school record of 25 wins in its regular-season finale on Saturday.

The Raiders rode the hot shooting of senior senior forward Michelle Westerberg to a 76-46 Cascade Conference victory over Eastern Oregon at Quinn Coliseum.

It was a real physical game but we were in control almost the entire game, said Raiders coach Shirley Huyett, whose team hasn't lost since Jan. 31 and is ranked No. 2 in the NAIA poll. We jumped to an early lead and played pretty well throughout the game.''

Southern Oregon (25-3, 12-2 Cascade Conference), the league runner-up, will host a conference semifinal game at 7 p.m. Friday at McNeal Pavilion. It will be the first home playoff game for the Raiders since 1993.

Westerberg led the Raiders with 17 points, including 6-of-11 shooting from the field.

SOU shot better than 53 percent from the field and connected on 7 of 11 3-pointers in the first half to build a 41-24 lead.

We shot real well, especially in the first half and then did what we needed to do to hang on, said Huyett.

Raider inside players Denise Berry and Nada Janackovic both scored 13 points and they combined for 13 rebounds.
