Four SOU athletes qualify for NAIA track nationals
ASHLAND -- Four Southern Oregon University track athletes qualified for the NAIA Championships and two broke school records Saturday in an open mini-meet at Raider Stadium.
Former South Medford standout Shawn Davis broke the school record in the hammer by more than four feet with his event-winning toss of 184 feet, 8 inches. Davis, a junior at Southern Oregon, also qualified for the national meet, surpassing the qualifying standard by 16 feet.
Nicole Irons, a freshman from Post Falls, Idaho, tied the school record she set last week and qualified for nationals in the pole vault, clearing 10-0.
Jim Hagemann, a senior All-American and the runner-up in the javelin at last year's national meet, qualified for a return trip with a toss of 197-11.
Paul Steenkolk also qualified for nationals with a toss of 53-6 in the shot put.
Several other Southern Oregon athletes fared well. Former Grants Pass standout Becky Millard won the high hurdles (16.15) and the intermediate hurdles (1:07.61). Landis Reed, who graduated South Medford, won the men's high hurdles in 15.24 and the intermediate hurdles in 59.06.
It was the Raiders' second meet of the season. Their next meet is the Artie Sullivan Invitational, which is next Saturday at Raider Stadium.
WILLAMETTE 7, SOUTHERN OREGON 2 -- At Ashland, the Raiders dropped to 3-3 on the season, thanks to dominating singles play by Willamette University.
Willamette won five of six singles matches on the day, one more than they needed for the team win.
Katie Fankhanel came through for the Raiders at No. 2 singles 6-4, 6-0, while the No. — doubles team of Lauren Barnard and Amy Krueger pulled out a 9-8 (7-5) pro-set victory.
