South swats 31 hits, sweeps Glide in softball opener

Shellie Hanson had spent so much time on the sideline that one could have expected a rusty performance when she finally strolled to the plate Wednesday afternoon at Fagone Field.

The South Medford senior hadn't played softball in nearly two years and hadn't played much of anything since shredding her anterior cruciate knee ligament in January of 1997 playing basketball.

Hanson has moved from the outfield, where she earned Southern Oregon Conference honorable mention as a sophomore, to first base. But she had a good eye and plenty of pop in her bat as the Panthers swept a 14-13, 16-4 season-opening doubleheader from Glide.

Hanson drew a walk in her first at-bat and then poked a solo home run in the second inning. She finished 4-for-7 on the day, scored five runs and drove in three more.

I was curious to see how she would do going around the bases, South Medford coach Duke Mondale said. She doesn't seem to favor (the knee) at all.

Angie Chaplin and Chrissy Champion were both 6 for 9 for the Panthers. Chaplin drove in eight runs and scored five, while Champion scored twice, had four RBIs and two stolen bases. The Panthers totaled 31 hits.

South won the opener in the bottom of the eighth inning when Chaplin singled and eventually scored on Amber Bates' sacrifice fly to center field.
