Ashland sweeps twinbill

ASHLAND -- Lindsay Calvo knows how to make an impression.

On Monday, the Ashland High freshman made the most of her varsity appearance, helping the Grizzlies earn a non-league softball sweep over Madison of Portland. The scores were 3-2 and 7-0 in five innings.

Calvo, who plays on Ashland's junior varsity team, blasted a three-run triple in her only plate appearance of the day and combined with Sam Guyars to pitch a two-hitter in the second game of the doubleheader to help Ashland improve to 4-0.

She has a lot of confidence in herself, said Ashland coach Kristeen Weiss. I think she decided it was a make-or-break situation and she pulled through for us.

Sara Combes' two-run homer in the first inning of the second contest proved to be the game-winner.

In the first game, Amy Williams' two-out, two-run double in the sixth inning was enough to put the Grizzlies over the top.
