Controversy surrounds Grizz water polo opener
EUGENE -- Ashland's water polo teams opened their season in atypical fashion Saturday -- with the Grizzlies protesting the first game for the boys.
In the boys season opener against West Albany, Ashland figured it had a 14-13 victory thanks to four goals from junior Dustin Asher and three goals from junior Adam Foley. The official scoresheet showed West Albany 14-12 triumph.
In its second match, Ashland topped Lebanon 26-2 as Foley scored six goals, while freshman Evan Mather, sophomore Clayton Mattson and freshman Brad Scoles notched four each..
Ashland's girls coasted to a 15-1 rout of Lebanon and a 10-2 decision over West Albany.
Senior Jordan Scheffler paced the girls in both contests, scoring five goals against Lebanon and four goals against West Albany. Ashland also received three-goal efforts against Lebanon from sophomore Vanessa Walker and senior Gracie Rowland-Dunn.
Gentry fends off Loy at Stewart Meadows
Ken Gentry withstood a valiant effort by Josh Loy on Sunday to win the men's club championship at Stewart Meadows Golf Course.
Gentry trailed Loy by one stroke after Saturday's first round of action, but was able to post a 2-over-par 72 Sunday to claim the title with a two-day total of 145. Loy finished in a tie for second with Ed Colin after each carded a two-day total of 147.
Len Renfer won the first flight championship with a two-day total of 156, followed by Sixto Rodriguez at 159 and Tim Trower at 163.
Joe Strickling won the second flight with a 162, while Herb Burrow was second at 165 with Ken Milsap and Lloyd Payne tied for third at 170.
Bob Gemaehlich won the third flight with a 167. Andy Nilsson's 177 was second and Bill Moody third (189).
