Naumes' 5 TDs propel St. Mary's

MARCOLA -- Senior tailback J.P. Naumes dashed into the end zone from 11 yards out with 54 seconds to play Friday night, lifting St. Mary's to a 36-31 non-league victory over Mohawk.

Naumes rushed for 286 yards and five touchdowns on 31 carries as the Crusaders scored their second straight victory.

Mohawk took a 31-30 lead with 3:57 to play when John Ness burst 25 yards to score his second TD. But St. Mary's responded with a 70-yard march that consumed three minutes to regain the lead.

But the Indians weren't through. Without the benefit of a timeout, Mohawk drove down field, reaching the St. Mary's 30 before time expired.

Ness picked up 196 yards on 27 carries for Mohawk.

It was a real shootout between the tailbacks, said St. Mary's coach Dick Maurer. It was just back and forth the whole night.

What worked repeatedly for the Crusaders was giving Naumes the ball and letting him run over the right side of the line behind center Aaron Brazille, right guard Erich Dailey, right tackle Travis Erickson and right end Gabe Winfrey.

He was able to bust over the line behind those guys all night, Maurer said. When the guts started to break, those guys had to make the big play.

PROSPECT 48, NORTH LAKE 40 -- At Prospect, Josh Hulsey carried the ball 19 times for 240 yards and Keith Howard had 14 carries for 102 yards before both Cougar players left the game early in the second half with injuries.

Prospect coach Mike Gordon said Hulsey suffered an ankle injury and Howard suffered a knee injury.

We could have rolled over and died after that, Gordon said. But the young kids -- especially David Maloy, D.J. Wood, Zach Gordon and Danny Andresen -- sucked it up and played hard. If they hadn't stepped up we would have lost the game.
