PREP CROSS COUNTRY

Pelicans, Grizzlies win pre-district

Klamath Union provided little doubt the Pelicans have the dominant boys cross country team in the league off their performance Thursday at the Southern Oregon Conference pre-district meet at Bear Creek Park.

What remains undetermined is which team is next best.

The Pelicans placed three runners in the top six, including winner Ian Dobson, to score 39 points. South Medford finished second with 87, but four schools finished within eight points of the Panthers.

The SOC runner-up spot and team qualifier for the state cross country meet appears to be a real dog fight.

Dobson won the 5,000-meter race in 16 minutes, 6 seconds, while South Medford junior Perry Custance took second at 16:29.

Custance stayed with Dobson for the first two miles, before the KU junior pulled away.

Eagle Point contender John Lucas missed the race because of illness.

In the girls event, sophomore Paris Edwards of Ashland led wire-to-wire for the individual victory and the Grizzlies captured the team title with 39 points. South Medford (65 points) edged Klamath Union (66) for second.

Edwards posted a time of 18:53, while teammate Anita Sindelar placed second at 19:46.
