Mustangs trample Chieftains, 9-1

ROGUE RIVER -- Tim Cotner gave Rogue River an early lead, but the Chieftains couldn't hold off Hidden Valley's onslaught Thursday.

Eight Mustangs scored as they pinned a 9-1 loss on Rogue River in the opening day of District 6 boys soccer.

Cotner took a through ball from Nick Gerstmar and beat the Mustangs' outside defense and freshman goalie Tim VanderStoel in the seventh minute.

It seems like we have to get scored on to get motivated, Hidden Valley coach Charlie Seal said. Every game we've played the other team has scored first.

Hidden Valley tied the game in the ninth minute on Denny Palmer's goal and Jesse Johnson put the Mustangs ahead for good four minutes later.

Ben Miljkovich added a goal at the 15th minute and Ben Jaramillo scored the first of two goals to end the Mustangs first-half production with a 4-1 advantage.

We were working the ball around well and attacking from many different directions, Seal said. It's going to make us a difficult team to defend because we have so many weapons.

Hidden Valley outshot Rogue River 35-6 and had six corner kicks to one for the Chiefs.

ILLINOIS VALLEY 2, PHOENIX 0 -- At Cave Junction, the Cougars didn't get a lot of shots on a goal, but made the best of them.

Junior striker Oshia Snitkin scored a goal in each half as the Cougars (4-1-1, 1-0 District 6) registered what may have been their first-ever victory over the Pirates (3-3, 0-1 District 6). Snitkin's first goal came from 2 yards out and gave Illinois Valley a 1-0 halftime advantage.

After sophomore goalie Nathan Hodges repeatedly turned back Phoenix threats to start the second half, Snitkin struck again 10 minutes after intermission. He took a cross pass from Levi Johnson and chipped in a 25-yard shot.

Phoenix unloaded 14 shots, but couldn't find the net.

BONANZA 8, CASCADE CHRISTIAN 2 -- At Bonanza, Tolis Tsakpinis scored four goals and recorded an assist for the Antlers in the District 6 match.

Sergio Selgado, Freddie Delgado, Jared Hawkins, and Jose Vargas added a goal apiece for Bonanza.

Jason Beamish and Andy Bellamy had a goal apiece for the Challengers.

NORTH VALLEY 1, MAZAMA O -- At Merlin, Clayton Rochholz accounted for the game's only goal at the 30th minute.

Rochholz took a pass from Tom Spagnolo at midfield, dribbled up the right side and beat Mazama goalie Keith Kilgore from 14 yards out.

North Valley outshot the Vikings 20-5 and had five corner kicks to one for Mazama.

HENLEY 1, ST. MARY'S 0 -- At Klamath Falls, Henley midfielder Craig Robin dribbled past two St. Mary's defenders and fed Josh Ketchum, who buried the game's lone goal from 16 yards out.

Ketchum's goal came at the 63rd minute mark of the second half in the District 6 contest.
