Ashland, South runners use same formula for success

EAGLE POINT -- Ashland and South Medford used almost the same formula in winning the boys and girls cross country team events Thursday during a Southern Oregon Conference four-way meet.

The Grizzly boys and the Panther girls had their top runners finish fourth and their first five runners in the top nine.

John Lucas of Eagle Point won the boys individual 5,000 meters race with a time of 15 minutes, 58 seconds. Perry Custance of South Medford was second at 16:25

Ashland captured the boys team title with a low score of 34 points. North Medford was runner-up with 55 points and South Medford placed third with 67.

Ashland's top runner was Nick Fikes and the Grizzlies took positions six through nine.

In the girls race, Sara Eyman led a South contingent that placed fourth through seventh. The Panthers also took ninth place to score a low total of 31 points.

Ashland's Paris Edwards won the girls race with a mark of 18:53, followed by Kim Harris of North Medford at 19:21.

KLAMATH UNION PREVAILS -- At Central Point, junior Ian Dobson smashed the course record and all seven of Klamath Union's boys finished in the Top 10 in a four-way SOC meet at the Jackson County Expo Park.

Dobson cruised over the 5,000-meter trail in 15 minutes, 48 seconds, destroying the existing mark of 16:23 set by Max King in 1997. Dobson reeled off a 5:02 first mile and came through the 2-mile mark in 10:20.

Klamath's Brady Lukkari also erased a course record, turning in a 19:21 effort to shave 35 seconds off the 1997 mark of 19:45 Crater's Jill Salmon.
