West Linn tops North for crown

Top-ranked West Linn romped past third-ranked North Medford 15-0, 15-13 in the championship match of the South Albany Tournament on Saturday.

North Medford's Mandie Horn set a school record for aces. Horn has 52 aces for the season, breaking the previous record of 44 held by Tosha Barnicoat in 1995.

The Tornado advanced from pool play with a 6-0 record, beating West Albany, St. Mary's of Portland and Mountain View along the way.

In bracket play North defeated Centennial 15-2, 15-8 in the quarterfinals and Thurston 15-10, 13-15, 15-11 in the semifinals.

HIDDEN VALLEY TOURNEY -- At Murphy, Marist walked away with the championship title after topping Bandon 15-3, 15-2, and North Valley won the consolation bracket final with a 17-15, 15-13 win over Pleasant Hill.

Despite being the host team, Hidden Valley struggled in the tournament, falling 15-13, 16-14 to Pleasant Hill in the first round of the consolation bracket.

North Valley made it to the consolation final with a tough 2-15, 15-7, 15-8 win over Mazama.

Grants Pass made it to championship bracket before falling to Marist 15-8, 2-15, 15-10.

ST. MARY'S 15-15, 15-15, LOST RIVER 9-10, 11-1 -- At Merrill, St. Mary's opened Southern Cascade League play with a doubleheader on the road and came out on top, improving to 8-2 on the season and 2-0 in league.

Lani Brophy, on her first day back following an elbow injury, helped the Crusaders with eight digs and 16 service points, including six aces.

Teammate Kristen Zielony had 11 digs on day for the Crusaders. St. Mary's coach James Joy said Becky Naumes helped carry the team in the second match with seven key kills. She had 12 kills and five blocks on the day.

Sam Greenlee was strong for the Crusaders in passing and at the service line.

At Riddle on Thursday night, St. Mary's sophomore setter Crystal Galedrige dominated the non-conference match with her serving.

Galedrige accounted for 16 points in the mH-atch with 17-of-18 serving, including nine aces.

CHILOQUIN, CASCADE CHRISTIAN SPLIT -- Senior hitter Tiffany Roehl's strong service game and Maria Stuzman's overall play helped Cascade Christian get a Southern Cascade League split against Chiloquin.

Chiloquin won the opening matcvh 15-4, 15-11, while Cascade took the second match 14-16, 15-4, 15-11.
