Julian, Caywood pace SOU harriers

SALEM -- Matt Caywood finished 113th individually to lead the Southern Oregon University men to 23rd place at the Willamette Invitational cross country meet on Saturday.

The SOU women, paced by Becky Julian's 138th-place showing, finished 20th.

Some 477 runners -- 298 men and 279 women -- competed in the event.

The top individual male runner was Dave Davis of Puget Sound, who covered the 8,000-meter course in 25 minutes, five seconds.

Davis, as well as the rest of the harriers, were unable to run through a locked gate near the finish line, causing them to run around the Willamette University football stadium. Officials estimate each runner lost about 45 seconds off of their time because of the mixup.

Caywood ran the course in 27:59. The remainder of his teammates were Jared Palmer (132nd, 28:24); Ian Brown (149th, 29:00); Chris Grau (153rd, 29:19); Amos Sime (164th, 29:45); and Cody Lane (167th, 30:03).

Former Ashland High standout Ian Solof, who is now the University of Portland coach, took fourth in 25:09.

The University of Portland edged cross-town rival Portland State to win the men's team title. Portland had 27 points and PSU 28.

In the women's 5,000-meter event, Julian ran 20:15. Other SOU runners were Venessa Curry (169th, 20:42); Alison Garich (172nd, 20:44); Deanna DeKay (174th, 20:49); Julie Brand (184th, 20:54); Briana Blair (186th, 20:56).

Portland State's Melissa Waggener, a former South Medford High standout, finished fourth among the women in 18:01 and Portland's Kilee Smith, a former Ashland High runner, was 10th in 18:16.

The University of Oregon won the women's team crown with 28 points. Portland was second with 40 points and Portland State third with 59.
