tryouts slated at Briscoe

ASHLAND -- Basketball tryouts will be held for sixth-grade boys at Briscoe gymnasium from 9-10:30 a.m. and 10:30-noon on Saturday.

Those interested in playing in the Southern Oregon Youth Club Basketball League, which plays approximately 20 games between January and March, should attend one of the tryouts.

Anyone interested in coaching a boy's sixth-, seventh- or eighth-grade basketball team should contact Ed at 482-5723.

shines for Oregon men golfers

CORVALLIS -- Andrew Tredway, of Ashland, posted the second-best score for the University of Oregon men's golf team and helped the Ducks tie for first in the 54-hole, 18-team Nike Northwest Classic held Monday and Tuesday at Trysting Tree Golf Club.

Oregon tied UCLA and Washington for the team title with an 856 total. B.J. Schlegenhauf of UCLA won the individual championship with an 8-under par 208.

Tredway finished 12th overall with a 1-under par 215. The Oregon junior shot rounds of 72, 72 and 71. The top Oregon golfer was Derek Croskey, who had a 212 total.

Another Ashland High alumnus, Jason Allred, finished with a 219 total, which earned him a tie for 31st. The Pepperdine University freshman carded rounds of 75, 73 and 71.

students earns their black belts

Two students from Del Saito's USA Karate Training Center in Medford were recently awarded their first-degree black belts.

Marilyn Tribble, 43, and Jason Mobley, 13, received black belts in the Shito-ryu form of karate.

Tribble, who already had a black belt in another type of karate, trained for two years under Saito to reach the plateau.

Mobley, an eighth-grade student at Hedrick Middle School, has been training in karate for seven years.

A third student of Saito, Kyle Johnson of Grants Pass, also received his black belt.
